The Ghosts of West Horsley Place

Sunday 18th August

Kindly Sponsored by the Wimbledon Carriage Company

This year the MGCCSE goes Ghost hunting at West Horsley Place in Surrey. The house may be better known to viewers of the BBC series “Ghosts” as Button House – home of Alison and Mike Cooper and a family of Ghosts.

The story closely resembles the facts as they unexpectedly inherit a large crumbling mansion. This is precisely what happened to Bamber Gascoigne when he unexpectedly inherited West Horsley Place from his Great Aunt, the Duchess of Roxburghe. Faced with a large mansion in need of repair he formed a Trust to look after the house and preserve it for the future.

The house itself is much older and dates back to 1425 when a manor house was built, although the site can be traced back to Saxon times. The Grange Park Opera have a round building to the rear of the house and performances run throughout the summer.

This visit coincides with an open day at the house which will be open, as will the gardens and barn. There will be some catering on site but you are welcome to bring a picnic should you wish.

The Centre will be hosting a Concours d’elegance and a Pride of Ownership on the lawns in front of the house – free to enter.

There will also be two free road runs into West Horsley – one from the east at Godstone and one from the south TBC. The Godstone run will start at  Knights Garden Centre.

To join us at this unique location and see if you can spot the Ghosts, or at least the filming locations for the series which was almost entirely filmed at the house and grounds. See if you can find the nightclub, Lady Fanny’s window, Thomas’s tree, the entrance gate, dolls house and more from the series.
